Electricity Demand and Infrastructure Vulnerability
Armenia faces a structural shift in its energy sector, with electricity demand projected to surge by 40–50% over the next five to six years. This growth is driven by the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle fleet, large-scale residential construction operating without gasification, and planned industrial heavyweights like copper smelting. Although solar energy now constitutes 17% of total production, its inherent seasonal and daily imbalances expose critical vulnerabilities within the legacy grid. Sustaining economic stability will require substantial capital expenditure directed at grid modernization, the development of pumped-storage hydroelectric capacity, and the strategic utilization of Iran as a regional energy-balancing mechanism.
