450 Million Dollars of Goods Under Sanctions: Who Pays?
Everything was supposed to settle down after the elections. It didn’t: Russia’s restrictions continue, in open breach of the four freedoms written into the EAEU treaty, and they hit perishables hardest. Tomatoes, cut flowers, and fish were grown for a single buyer from the start, so rerouting them to Europe is wishful thinking rather than trade policy. Rubles, meanwhile, are piling up in Armenia, since getting them back out has become much harder, and banks now put margins of up to 25% on the exchange. We also talk about what someone holding rubles can do to lose less.
